Yin Yoga is known as “the quiet yoga.” It is a more meditative form of yoga. There are no sun salutations or standing postures. The entire sequence is done on the floor. In Yin Yoga, floor postures are held passively for several minutes in order to access a safe and positive “stress” on the deep layers of connective tissue in the body. It is great for all body types, ranging from beginners and seniors to athletes. It is especially good for those with existing joint issues. (No previous yoga experience required.)
Physically, Yin Yoga helps to maintain and restore the natural mobility of the joints (range of motion.) Because this practice emphasizes stillness and silence, the best argument for Yin Yoga may be in its ability to help to quiet the mind.
“Yin (Yoga) is for everyone: young, old, fat, thin, sporty, sedentary (especially sedentary!), wound up, chilled out and everything in between. If you have a body and you can breathe, you can practice, and benefit from, yin yoga.” ~ Dearbhla Kelly, M.A.
